Pier Recruitment’s Charity Single Launch, in partnership with the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity

The idea

Christmas is usually the season for spending time with loved ones, food aplenty, carols around a cosy fireplace, putting up the Christmas tree and remembering everything we are thankful for. Some choose to spend it at home, some choose spent it visiting family (both near and afar) but sadly, some are not lucky enough to be given a choice and are told they have to spend it in hospital. It’s difficult to imagine what it must feel like to be told this, especially if you are a child.

Pier Recruitment is partnered with the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, a Brighton-based charity that has been supporting poorly children for over 50 years. The charity was set up in 1967 by Dr. Trevor Mann, who recognised that there was a real need for additional resources to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies. They are the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital as well as the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, and 2017 marks their 50th anniversary.

In 2016, we visited The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital where we witnessed the fantastic work of the Charity and its partner’s donations – first hand. It is also where we heard the sentence that soon became the epicentre of our 2017 fundraising project;

“sometimes children worry that Santa won’t know where they are when he visits, so simple things like writing a small note at the end of their Christmas list to explain where they are, really helps”

This statement really struck a chord with us. Whilst hospitals do everything in their power to make Christmas as festive and comfortable as possible, it is difficult to comprehend the difficulties it must present families with.

The production

So, in January 2017, we decided to do something that would really stand out. Something that hasn’t really been done in Sussex before. Something that we hoped would really raise awareness of the Charity and the amazing work they do..so we concocted the crazy idea to write a ‘Band-Aid style’ Christmas Charity Single to mark the Rockinghorse Charity’s 50th anniversary – how hard could it be?

It all began in the Spring of 2017 and (admittedly) sounded like the beginning of a terrible joke; what do you get when you cross a determined Director, a musical Marketing Manager, a resourceful Recruitment Consultant, a keyboard and a few glasses of Tesco’s finest…

…oh, the possibilities were endless.

Needless to say, after approximately 6 hours of chords, harmonies, melodies and a few (many) bum-notes, we had ourselves a song. It wasn’t anything to rival Beyonce, but we were proud of it. After elation that we finally had something to show for our madness, we realised that the hardest part was yet to come.

We had to pitch the idea (and the song)  to the charity and local companies – what if they didn’t like it?! We had visions of people laughing at us, thinking it was all a big joke or saying “you’re better off sticking with recruitment”.

Luckily, the song was extremely well received and we were starting to think we should begin preparing our speeches for the Grammy’s.  After high-levels of interest (and sadly having to turn companies away), we were overjoyed to welcome on-board representatives from the following businesses, to sing on the track: The Focus Group, Posh Totty Designs, Zsta Architects, Mercedes, Quality Care Insurance, Domestic and General, Cobb Digital, Holiday, Neilson Holidays and children from Bird Studios/BRICTT. What a line-up!

In September 2017 the doors at North Brighton Recording opened and recording commenced (eek). Despite their initial reservations, we have been assured that everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the studio experience (despite a few initial nerves) and that they would love to do it all again! Whilst we were unsure about how successful the majority of their singing careers would be, it was refreshing to hear that the project was already proving to be successful and enjoyable and that the participating companies were fully behind us in taking the venture through to completion.

The launch

The official launch party was held on Wednesday 22nd November at the Grand Hotel, Brighton – and event was a great success. Over 200 people from local businesses came together in celebration of the Rockinghorse Charity and we raised £1,285 from the Raffle Alone.

From launch sponsors, participating companies and the raffle – we have raised a whopping £5,885! We are hoping to (at least) double this by Christmas, as the song circulates within the public, online and through various social media sites/websites. Post-launch – the journey continues…

Post-launch, we are hoping that the video to gain as many views as possible. There is a text to donate code (see below) and all proceeds will go directly to the Rockinghorse Charity to fund their upcoming projects. PLEASE keep an eye on our social media which is where you will find the video – the more shares we gain, the more views we gain, which will hopefully convert to text donations!
